If you are looking for an imaginative story with strong, likable characters, then look no further.  Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan is a combination of fantasy and historical fiction that spans the years and miles to introduce us to three young teens. Friedrich in Germany, Mike in Pennsylvania and Ivy in California are each faced with very daunting challenges that include rescuing a father, protecting a brother, and holding a family together.  All of these while dealing with war, poverty and discrimination. Their lives become intertwined when they each find themselves in possession of a magical harmonica. This magic, partnered with each teen’s gift of melody, creates a beautifully uplifting story.

I could barely put this book down! Its pages are filled with adventure and intrigue as well as young teens that face adversity with bravery, kindness and tolerance.  This book would be best for tweens or young teens due to the complex storyline that at times deals with difficult situations such as hatred and war.
