September is the Perfect Time to get Your Library Card

By: Christina Shields

Did you know that you only have to be 5 years old to get your own library card? Guardians, please visit our FAQs page here to find out what you need to bring to the library in order to get your child their very own library card! This month (September), Hamilton East Public Library is joining the American Library Association (ALA) for a nationwide Library Card Sign-up celebration. Libraries offer many educational resources (books, databases, e-books, videos, programs and more) and can play an important part in a child’s education and development.

“Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the American Library Association and libraries unite in a national effort to ensure every child signs-up for their own library card.

Throughout the school year, public librarians and library staff will assist parents and caregivers with saving hundreds of dollars on educational resources and services for students. From free access to STEAM programs/activities, educational apps, in-person and virtual homework help, technology workshops to the expertise of librarians, a library card is one of the most cost effective back to school supplies available. How much money can you save?  Visit our Library Value Calculator to total your savings.” — ALA

This year, Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” characters Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Bo Peep and friends are going on an adventure as Honorary Chairs of Library Card Sign-Up Month. In their role, they will promote the value of a library card and bring attention to the many ways libraries transform lives and communities. We hope to see you soon at either the Fishers and/or Noblesville Public library!
